The Story
About this piece
Saint Simeon was a very devout Christian from the tribe of Levi. He was one of seventy scholars who travelled to Alexandria to include texts of the Holy Scripture for the Library of Alexandria for the Egyptian pharaoh Ptolemy II Philadelphus (285-247 B.C.). He translated the scriptures from the book of the Prophet Isaiah from Hebrew into Greek. During that time an angel appeared to him and told him he would not die before holding the Christ child in his arms.
One day Simeon went to the temple and on that day, the 40th day since Jesus was born, Mary and Joseph brought in Jesus to present him to the priests in the temple as required by the Law of Moses. Saint Simeon held the Christ child in his arms just as the angel said.
This is an example of a handmade ICON written (painted) using egg tempura on a wood panel with the Kovcheg or raised border. If you have a favorite saint I can paint it in the Byzantine tradition however, this is a longer process. Expect to wait a few months to receive the ICON because the ICON has to cure.
